Avenger Angel A Novel of the Lost Angels Heather KilloughWalden Books

**mild spoilers**

I think I'm reacting so strongly to this book because I had read the first one hundred pages or so, decided it was a good series, and set it aside to finish it and the rest of the series until later. So, when I picked it up again, I had thought I had a good series with at least four books waiting for me to read. Unfortunately, this turned out not to be the case.

The book started out strong with interesting world, complex characters, and good pacing, but about halfway through, it broke down. It changed so remarkably that it really did feel like another author came in and finished the book--the characters became vapid, they made strange/illogical decisions, the heroine lost her spunk and depth, and the hero became an aggressive jerk. Plus, characters get turned into vampires (why? this is about angels) and the guy we thought was the villain ends up getting trumped by an even more powerful, heretofore unheard of group that appears near the end of the book. It's like Deus ex Machina, but opposite. Either of those two plot twists could have waited for the second book, or even a second series. Hitting the reader with this smorgasbord of paranormal romance motifs in the first book is just overwhelming.

Trigger warning: the one sex scene in this book is what they might try to bill as "BDSM"; but honestly, with no discussion of boundaries between the characters ahead of time and no clues for the reader dropped into the preceding text, it's extremely jarring. (If you're going to write a BDSM novel, go ahead! But label it as such, and do a much better job of ramping up to the action in it. This just reads as yet another example of messy writing.)

Avenger Angel A Novel of the Lost Angels Heather KilloughWalden Books Reviews

It isn't often that an author has the ability to immerse the reader so deeply into their story that you feel as if you are a third-party voyeur into their world. Heather Killough-Walden has that gift!

Before reading the first book in the series, I HIGHLY recommend reading the e-book novella, "Always Angel". In it, you will be given a little more insight and backstory to lives of the characters and when finally reading "Avenger's Angel" you will quickly recognize the scenarios and correlate the previously read knowledge for a more complex understanding.

Heather's gift of storytelling is truly wonderful. You empathize with victims, have your heartstrings pulled for problem-plagued lovers and, yes, you even root for the bad guys to find their own true paths. All of this while being wrapped up in the sensual undertones of the paranormal.

The original story begins with The Old Man's four Archangels (Gabriel, Uriel, Azrael and Michael) who chose to come to Earth to find their lost Archesses, the women who were made for them alone. Each Archangel has lived many centuries trying to find their other half and "Avenger's Angel" opens with one of them finally recongnizing their mate. The Archesses were born with complimenting abilities (i.e., controlling the weather, the gift of healing, etc.) and do not know that they were created by The Old Man, nor that they are anything by humans with extrodinary gifts - let alone fated for an Archangel. I won't give you any more details in this review as I believe this is a story best unfolded by the reader alone. Trust me - you will be entranced with the book (and the Author's storytelling ability) just as I have.

The story moves along itself so fluently that once you start, you'll find it difficult to stop. The second novels' storyline lends a brief glimps within the first and you're left waiting and wanting more, but are secure in the knowledge that the overall story isn't over... it's just begun!
I was hooked on this series as soon as I started "Always Angel" (the prequel to 'Lost Angels"). Uriel and Ellie are super! I can really see Eleanor as a willowy, slender, calm woman, but there is a huge amount of hidden depth to this character. Uriel-you really need a script to keep track of this fellow's "names". There's Uriel the archangel, The Angel of Vengence, Christopher Daniels- famous actor and finally Jonathan Brakes - vampire character played by said famous actor. That's a lot of names for one fellow.

The one character I found most intriguing was "The Old Man". Heather you did a masterful job with this one! The ethos you wove about this character was fascinating. A whole new light now shines in the darkness.

Then there's Sam, boy this guy has a "head" on him, plotting to get Uriel to serve him eternally. Has he never heard the phase "Vengence is mine saith the ..."?

Oh I have been so wrapped up in this series that by the time you read this I will already be buried in book 4! ~P~
My head is spinning. Archangels, archesses, angels, guardians, Samael, Samael's servants and other evil things come and go and cross swords and threaten and attempt to kill and kidnap. My word! How Heather Killough-Walden can keep track of all this and have it even make any sense is awe-inspiring. But does it work. Somehow it all makes sense and moves smoothly from one crazy action to another. Then there are the too-often frustrated romance scenes. Aargh! All of it enough to force me to turn to the next page to find out what happens to these characters next.

Ms. Killough-Walden manages to weave quite a unique back story of God (aka Old Man) into this plot and how he treats his creation(s) bringing a few "hmmmms" out of me. Vampires and demons and other wild and wooly characters do not phase me at all in these fantasy/paranormal novels. This backstory, however, had me thinking. Hmmm. Another really good read from this author. I am on to the next novel in the series -- "Messenger Angel." Big smile.
