This was a great follow up to BATTLESCARS. I have seen some negativity written about the heroine of this book and I could not disagree more. There are millions of women stuck in a toxic relationship and feel they have no way out for one reason or another. This does not make them weak or selfish in my eyes. I mean we all have had friends in our lives who are eerily similar to Piper. I know I have had quite a few. Yes, she does go back and forth between Cole and Blake numerous times. Cole came back from the military with PTSD and was no longer the man Piper fell in love with. He was not willing to help himself or accept help from others. Piper knew she needed to get out. But because of her memories of the man he once was, she kept feeling the need to give him another chance. I don't fault her for turning to a man who made her feel safe, loved and treasured. Blake did all of that for her and more. I think the authors portrayal of an abusive relationship was spot on. Although the abuse was all mental, it was still abuse.Ok, enough of the serious stuff. Granny made an appearance once again and cracked me up with her one liners. I so wish I had a granny like this.
"Why does everyone expect me to sugarcoat stuff? Do I look like a ******* bakery?"
We got to revisit with Aubrey and Jake and catch up on all that has happened with them. This story wasn't as sweet as the first but I still loved it, "flawed" heroine and all. This tiny excerpt from the book explains a lot about Piper..... "My biggest weakness my entire life is that I care too much about everyone else and not enough about myself." Great book and I can't wait to read more from this series.

Wow what a great sequel, I loved Blake and Piper's story congrats to the author for depicting and raw and gritty story of loyalty, love, hurt, pain, confusion and survival. Piper was stuck in a catch 22 she wanted so bad to be loyal to Cole they had been together for 8 yrs, however Cole had some serious issues with readjusting to civilian life, as do most of the men and women that have served and survived in Iraq. Cole suffer from PTSD, drug and alcohol addiction, however he was also very manipulative he wanted his cake and ice cream too; Cole needed serious help, unfortunately Piper instead of making him get professional help she tried to love him through the pain which only enabled him. Then we have Black who tried so hard to be there for Piper, he goes beyond what the normal man would do; it's true what they say about love it makes you do the strangest things, Blake was willing to step back and give Piper whatever she wanted even if it meant losing her, however Cole decided he has to have Piper even if it meant she was unhappy. The battle of emotions between these 3 were true to life feelings the Author did a wonderful job with these characters, and awesome story line, I was right there with them; I can't wait to read Derek's story. Be for warned that there is no prelude to Derek's story like there was for Piper and Blake. 2 thumbs up.
I didn't read book one and jumped on in at book two. To be honest, I didn't feel it made much of a difference. There really wasn't any character that I would have wanted to know previously or have any more back story on. I found it hard to be invested in any of them.
I tried to like Piper but she toyed with the emotions of too many people for me to find any sympathy or warmth for her at all, and cheesy, corny Blake was a wimpy pushover. I would have liked to bang both their heads together to see if it knocked any sense into them. They did plenty of banging other things together all on their own.
It was an easy read, with an uncomplicated plot, what I call a page flicker, where the pages drift by and don't really need much attention from you at all.
I was a little shocked that the bad boy, obnoxious boyfriend turned out to be suffering from a genuine problem, I think the issue of PTSD could have been treated a little more sensitively, and although Piper shed many tears saying she had tried to support him and seek help, I didn't see a lot of evidence of that. Maybe it was in the first book.
All in all it was competent enough, but I couldn't invest in the characters, despite the fact they were rock stars.
