The Whip Catherine Cookson 9780552123686 Books Reviews

The Whip Full development of all the characters. The struggle between good and evil, but giving a glimpse of how their is a mixture of both in us all, separated only intent and degrees of wrong doing. The plot held my attention with its twists and turns.
Loved it as I do most of. Catherine cook sons books I look forward to more of them
Another of catherine cookson's books and just as good as the rest. Never disappointing, always a twist or two to keep you guessing.
Most of Cookson's stories involve some dark themes and descriptions of horrible living and working conditions and this one is no different. The heroine of The Whip, however, Emma is subjected to even more trauma, violence and heartbreak than most of Cookson's main characters. It's a sad but fascinating story.
story of hardship and survival. The pastor and the young circus girl. An unlikely combination that your sure from the outset is love. And so it proves to be just that. Unrequited for most of the book with plenty of suffering on all fronts. Quaint in its terminology and recollections of a different era.
Most depressing book i have read. Misery upon misery. I am a Cookson fan. Have read many of her books and there is misery in all of them, but not like this one.
I have read 75% of this book and will finish it to hopefully fine a good ending. Unless you are into depressing literature don't read.
Of course it is well written like all her books.
In the 80's this story was part of a reader's digest condensed book. I lost the book years ago and since I was a teen when I read it I forgot the name of the author and the title of the book I only remembered the plot. After some searching I was glad I found this gem. I finished reading it in less than a week (I had to go to work can't read all day) I love this book. Emma suffering was epic and I felt one of her enemies deserved a few cracks of the whip. Even though I loved the book I did not like it when Emma's suffering hit an unnecessary level of brutality. Even with that being said the late great Catherine Cookson's The Whip is a wonderful read. The images and the characters truly come to life and at the end you hate to tell Emma goodbye.
